In Conversation with Diana Goodwin

Diana Goodwin is the Founder and CEO of AquaMobile Swim School – a service that provides at-home private swim lessons and lifeguarding services for children and adults in Canada, U.S and Australia. She is also one of our newly appointed board members.

We sat down with Diana to chat about the story behind AquaMobile, the decision to join the board of directors and what she hopes to bring to the organization as a director.

Why did you decide to launch AquaMobile?

When I was younger, my parents tried to get me into swim lessons at a community centre and I hated it. I would sit at the side of the pool shivering and not go into the water because I was uncomfortable. It was not until I had private swim lessons in a comfortable environment that I started learning and learned to love the water.

As a teenager, I went on to become a swim instructor and a lifeguard.

Aside from just helping people learn lifesaving and water safety skills, learning to swim can also make you more confident and that confidence permeates into other parts of your life as well.

Fast forward to the present, the reason why I started AquaMobile is because I wanted to bring the same confidence, that I developed through sports, into other people’s lives and AquaMobile is how I have been doing that.

What was the turning point in your life, when you decided to leverage your experience as a swim instructor and launch a whole company based on it?

I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I worked as a management consultant for three years, while trying to figure out what I wanted to do and I decided to pursue a one year MBA. The plan was that I would work on my business plan while pursuing my MBA and launch it once I was done. That is exactly what I did.

How did you hear about Peerscale and why did you decide to join it?

I heard about Peerscale in January of 2017 when they were hosting an event. I was invited and I met the CEO at that time.  She encouraged me to get involved and get to know the organization better.

I wanted to be surrounded by people who are smart tech entrepreneurs, who are doing big things and that is exactly what Peerscale is – a community of incredibly successful and talented entrepreneurs. So, I decided to join.

How has having a CEO membership with Peerscale benefited you and your company?

It has been advantageous in a number of ways. Even just being in my peergroup has helped me.

In our peergroups we help each other work through different business challenges we are facing. Having a strong support system and peers to learn from has been incredibly valuable.

I also love the fact that there are a lot of opportunities to meet other members outside of your own peergroup. A great example of that is the annual retreat as well as the various power sessions sessions and networking dinners.

Why did you decide to join the Board of Directors and what do you hope to contribute to the board?

I believe that there is huge value in being a member of Peerscale. As I have gotten to know the organization better, I think it can also benefit a lot of other entrepreneurs as well and I want to be able to contribute to that story and help steer it on a continued path of success.

The organization is on a great path and recognizes the need for diversity and bringing in some of the younger members of the tech community into the Peerscale family. I am a part of that wave of younger entrepreneurs and I would encourage others to join as well.

What advice do you have for people who are looking to join Peerscale?

I would advise that you talk to some of the current members or check out one of the events because there are lots of good things happening.

Tap into the community, get out there, network and get to know other tech entrepreneurs.
